Called to Serve

Ross's mom has been called to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints! She will serve in the New York, New york North mission as a Family History Records Preservation Specialist. This means that she'll spend her daytime hours Monday through Friday at a county courthouse scanning records and then spend her evenings and weekends working with the members in that area. And one of the funnest things about her mission is that she gets to serve her whole mission with her good friend, Janet, as her companion!

Evelyn was really nervous at first when she realized that she had been asked to serve in New York. The idea of going to New York City terrified her. But after talking to her mission President, they found out that they would actually be serving about two hours outside the big city in a small town called Goshen. This put both of their minds greatly at ease.

On March 3rd they were set apart as missionaries by their Stake President. That evening, we joined her for dinner and then went to Janet's house for the special event. Some people in their ward had made this fun candy poster to send them off.
Before getting set apart, Don, Ross and Stuart were able to give her a blessing also. They were also able to stand in the circle when the Stake President her and Janet apart. It is wonderful that she has such great sons who hold the priesthood and can do those types of special things for her.

We made sure we got one more family picture with her before sending her off for a whole year.
Leah is so excited that her Grandma is a missionary! She was actually pretty sad when we left her house that night and Janet was the one going with Grandma on her mission and not her. Leah had herself pretty convinced that she would be the one to take Grandma to New York. She knows that Grandma will be in New York, but I don't think she entirely understands what that means. Leah loves her Grandma Leslie a lot and she also loves going to Grandma Leslie's to play. And Grandma Leslie in turn loves to see Leah and spoil her. It hasn't sunk in yet that she won't be seeing Grandma again for a long time. When it does, it could be pretty devastating. But we're planning to Skype with her on the computer when we can. And I want to make sure we send lots of pictures and packages. A year is a long time, but I'm sure it will go by pretty fast. We are really happy that she has accepted this call to serve and we're looking forward to hearing all about the adventures that her and Janet will have in New York.
